We’ll see

A farmer had only one horse. One day, his horse ran away.

His neighbors said, “I’m so sorry. This is such bad news. You must be so upset.”

The man just said, “We’ll see.”

A few days later, his horse came back with twenty wild horses following. The man and his son corralled all twenty-one horses.

His neighbors said, “Congratulations! This is such good news. You must be so happy!”

The man just said, “We’ll see.”

One of the wild horses kicked the man’s only son, breaking both his legs.

His neighbors said, “I’m so sorry. This is such bad news. You must be so upset.”

The man just said, “We’ll see.”

The country went to war, and every able-bodied young man was drafted to fight. The war was terrible and killed every young man, but the farmer’s son was spared, since his broken legs prevented him from being drafted.

His neighbors said, “Congratulations! This is such good news. You must be so happy!”

The man just said, “We’ll see.”

Unix Pipes

Doug McIlroy beschreibt Pipes, lange bevor Unix das Licht der Welt erblickte.

            Summary--what's most important.
To put my strongest concerns into a nutshell:
1. We should have some ways of coupling programs like
garden hose--screw in another segment when it becomes when
it becomes necessary to massage data in another way.
This is the way of IO also.
2. Our loader should be able to do link-loading and
controlled establishment.
3. Our library filing scheme should allow for rather
general indexing, responsibility, generations, data path
4. It should be possible to get private system components
(all routines are system components) for buggering around with.

Arrivederci, capitano!

18 Jahre. Es war eine Ehre.

For hours, I waited for the low tide to arrive along a shallow lagoon on a remote island off the Antarctic Peninsula. Like clockwork, the leopard seal arrived in the lagoon just before low tide. It put its head in the water and looked just like a rock sitting in the receding water. The young Gentoo penguins only dare to enter the water when it is shallow and when they got close enough to the seal, it turned its head at lightning speed, catching one of the penguins by its feet and taking it to deep water. Once the seal reached open water, I followed it and swam parallel to it, observing its actions. To my surprise, it let go of the penguin twice. Each time, the seal chased after the penguin again, as if it was enjoying the game. The terrified penguin tried to escape as the game continued. But soon, the end came.

Jetzt hat es mich doch noch erwischt.

Am selben Tag, an dem Go 1.18 veröffentlicht wurde, färbten sich die C- und T-Linien rot.

Milde Symptome (3 x 💉; yeah science!), danke der Nachfrage.

I think it’s important to understand that you’re not doing it for a gold medal. Regardless of which life you chose to live, you will sacrifice something, that’s the way it is.

As soon as you go in one direction, you also choose to not go in all other directions at the same time. It’s the basic precondition for going anywhere at all.

But on the path you take, you will experience fantastic things, even though it’s uphill there will be a great view when you’re at the top, and that’s what makes it worth it, to be on this journey with people you love. It doesn’t matter that much where the journey ends. A movie with a sad ending is also a good movie – and a movie with a nice ending makes you happy.

I’m very happy for this medal around my neck, and for getting all the way here. But why do you do it? I don’t think you get to pick your dreams, they pick us. It’s up to us to realize them or not, and it seems like people who try to realize their dreams are happier.
